Wal-Mart Refuses to Do Business With Sugar Producer on Slavery Blacklist

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., the world's largest retailer, is refusing to buy sugar from Brazilian
sugar supplier Cosan SA Industria & Comercio. The company was just added to a slavery "blacklist" by the Brazilian government. The list reveals companies whose workers are kept in slave-like working conditions. Cosan, the world's largest sugar cane producer, denies the charges and says that it has already gotten an injunction taking its name off the list. Cosan said the whole thing was a "mistake" and that the problems came from a third party cane cutter.
"Cosan had problems with a contractor three years ago and solved them immediately," [Agriculture Minister] Stephanes said. "It has good practices."
The slavery blacklist is managed by the Labor Ministry. Stephanes suggested Cosan and Labor Ministry officials meet to discuss its removal from the blacklist.
The Labor Ministry said 42 Cosan workers were found and "liberated" from conditions analogous to slavery. Another 163 employers are also on the ministry blacklist, which was created in 2004 and is updated every six months.
Petroleo Brasileiro SA's fuel distribution unit, which buys ethanol from Cosan, may consider "restrictions" on the company, a BR Distribuidora spokesman, who couldn't be named because of company policy, said yesterday. Petrobras is Brazil's state-controlled oil producer.
The sugarcane industry in Latin America has been under investigation for years by human rights watch groups, especially for its use of child labor. There has been a movement to end the use of human labor to cut sugarcane with machetes, and to use machines instead. That then raises the issue of what the cane cutters will do for a living. In any event, it's a good thing that Wal-Mart is refusing to do business with any company that lands on one of these blacklists.
Walmart issued a statement saying that it "vehemently repudiates any practice that does not respect human rights."

| Developer's Plans Reveal for New Apple Store Prototype in Palo Alto

The Mercury News reports that Apple is planning to build a new type of Apple Store in Palo Alto, California. The new store sounds like a potentially greener version of an Apple store. It will have treens growing inside.
There it will build an Apple Store that project developers referred to in planning documents as "a new prototype for the company." The facade will be entirely transparent at ground level, vast skylights will flood the store with natural light, and trees will grow inside, fed by the sunlight from above, according to a proposal submitted to the city's architectural review board.
The building at 340 University Ave. is an 86-year-old structure best known as the longtime home of Liddicoat's grocery. More recently it housed Z Gallerie furniture store, and it has mostly stood vacant since that store closed several months ago.
The Mercury News says the store's developers say the prototype Apple store makes the street part of the store's interior to create "a commons for the applicant's community to gather." You can find more details about Apple's Palo Alto store plans here.

| Macy's Closing Five Stores
01.08.2010 19:50 2 views 0 comments Tags: Wall, Brick, Research, Five, Street, Wall Street, News, Recent, Our News
The Wall Street Journal reports that Macy's plans to close five stores in Boise, Idaho; Waterford, Mich.; St. Ann, Mo.; Missoula, Mont.; and Burlington, N.J. The article says the Macy's store closings could hurt the malls already smarting from other store closings.
Macy's recent store closures will be leaving malls already hurt by a wave of national chain closures since 2008, according to Equity Research Analyst Brian S. Sozzi. He added the exit of Macy's could cause others to vacate, creating a "dead mall" syndrome, which is when vacancy rates rise above 70%.
"All in all, the store closures were in cities with unemployment and median income levels significantly worse than state and national averages," Sozzi said. "People in these areas shifted what discretionary purchases they were making to better kept/promoted malls or big box stores able to drive low prices on a range of merchandise in a one-stop format."
The WSJ says Macy's closed 11 stores last year and opened five new ones.

| White House to Lost Fans: We Won't Preempt Season Premiere
01.08.2010 17:44 2 views 0 comments Tags: Obama, Fort, President, State, Cuba, Robert, House, White House, Internet, Tony, Love, News, Buzz, States, President Obama, Gibbs, Robert Gibbs, Recent, Our News, Press, Union, Secretary, Clinton
So, is President Obama secretly a Lost fan? In response to the outrage
over the possibility that President Obama's State of the Union speech would preempt the three hour debut of the last season of Lost, White House press secretary Gibbs said that the state of the union for Lost fans is good: the season premiere won't be interrupted by the annual State of the Union speech. CBS News reports:
The White House on Friday assured fans of the television show "Lost" that President Obama's State of the Union address would not disrupt the show's highly-anticipated three-hour premiere.
"I don't foresee a scenario in which the millions of people who hope to see a conclusion to 'Lost' are pre-empted by the president," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said at his daily briefing.
"You can quote an administration official on that," he added cheekily.
The date on which Mr. Obama will deliver the annual address is not yet set in stone. Gibbs would only say that it would take place "soon."
The State of the Union is typically delivered in late January, and networks anticipated this year's speech would fall on Jan. 26. The date, however, appears to be in flux, and news that the president may deliver the speech on Feb. 2, the date of the "Lost" season premiere, set off a flurry of Internet protests.
Lost fans everywhere are rejoicing at the news. No one -- and we mean no one -- can defeat Benjamin Linus. Or the Island, for that matter. The Four Toed Statue has spoken. And really, it doesn't matter who is president, the state of the union speech is always a big bore. Presidents either give some vague oratorical call to action, or they give a laundry list speech -- you know, like the one where President Bush talked about everything from hydrogen cars to steroids in baseball. Clinton did a few of those, as well. No important new policy is generally announced in state of the union speeches.
So, back to the last season of Lost. We just can't wait to see what happened after Juliet detonated the hydrogen bomb. If time resets, and the plane crash never happened, well, that's going to make for a very interesting season indeed. Carlton Cuse has promised us that the mystery of the Smoke Monster and of the Four Toed Statue will be revealed. We're counting on it.

| Foot Locker Plans to Close 117 Stores
01.08.2010 17:20 2 views 0 comments Tags: Fort, Wall, Kill, Street, Wall Street, News, Plank, Clock, Land, Recent, Our News, Asian
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Foot Locker, Inc. will close 117 stores. The WSJ says this wil make it 190 Foot Locker stores closed for the past fiscal year. The company is also cutting 120 jobs.
The closures, affecting mostly Foot Locker and Lady Foot Locker outlets in the U.S., would bring to 190 the number of shutterings for the fiscal year ending Jan. 30. The company had 3,601 stores as of Oct. 31.
Aside from the economic downturn, the athletic apparel and footwear chain has been hurt by a longer-running fashion shift toward casual shoes and away from sneakers. Foot Locker has reacted by lowering costs, closing stores and weeding out poorly performing products.
Foot Locker's store closing plan is part of an overall plan to merge the Lady Foot Locker chain with the retailer's other brands: Foot Locker, Kids Foot Locker and Footaction.

| Feeling Rejected? Study Suggests a Tylenol Will Ease the Psychological Pain
01.08.2010 17:00 2 views 0 comments Tags: Wall, That, Wire, University, News, Study, Recent, Our News, Christmas, Each
Feeling rejected by that cute guy you met at a Christmas party? Get left off an invitation list? No problem, just take a Tylenol. That's the surprising result of a new study
that says you can treat psychological pain the same way as physical pain.
Getting the snub from friends can feel like a slap in the face. Now researchers say treating such social pain may be as easy as popping a pain pill. They warn, however, that more research is needed before anyone tries the approach.
The finding builds on research showing that psychological blows not only feel like they hurt us, they actually do. For instance, scientists have found a gene linked with both physical pain and a person's sensitivity to rejection. And some of the same brain regions are linked with both pain types.
So perhaps it's not surprising that a painkiller would alleviate both as well.
"The idea that a drug designed to alleviate physical pain should reduce the pain of social rejection seemed simple and straightforward based on what we know about neural overlap between social and physical pain systems," said lead researcher C. Nathan DeWall of the University of Kentucky. "To my surprise, I couldn't find anyone who had ever tested this idea."
But DeWall warns more research is needed to firm up the results. "Our findings do not constitute a call for widespread use of acetaminophen to cope with all types of personal problems," the researchers write in a forthcoming issue of the journal Psychological Science.
The study involved two experiments involving acetaminophen, the main ingredient in Tylenol.
This particular study used acetaminophen, the main ingredient in Tylenol. Two groups of people were psychologically evaluated. Then they were either given a placebo or the painkiller. The subjects played a computer games set up create feelings of social rejection (just the videogame you were hoping to get for Christmas!) while they had their brains scanned.
The painkillers didn't affect overall happiness over time, but those with painkillers felt less pain from being rejected.

| St. John Ends Contract With Angelina Jolie, Hires Karen Elson
01.08.2010 13:00 2 views 0 comments Tags: Wire, Jobs, Anger, News, Chief, Grey, Karen, Recent, Our News
St. John has ended its relationship with Angelina Jolie, after a disastrous campaign that saw sales plummet. The ads with Angie weren't really the problem, though. The problem was the "new creative direction" that the company took, which infuriated its customers. Suddenly the company made clothes that its customers refused to wear. But the company decided to blame Angelina instead, which is ridiculous. The clothing Angie wore in the campaign was, for the most part, fabulous. But it wasn't what was on the racks at Neiman Marcus. Instead of sophisticated knits for women who travel a lot, they offered miniskirts and more cut and sewn pieces. Customers voted with their pocketbooks in droves.
Chief executive officer Glenn McMahon told WWD that Angelina Jolie "overshadowed the brand." He also says, "We wanted to make a clean break from actresses and steer away from blondes and cleanse the palette."
Now red-headed model Karen Elson is the face of St. John's Spring 2010 campaign, which was photographed by Greg Kadel. The new campaign looks great, but it is really hard to beat the sophisticated look of the Angelina Jolie St. John campaign. St. John needed to go back to the knit suits that its customer base -- female lawyers, accountants, politicians and socialites -- wanted to wear. If the clothes are there, the customers will come back.

The New York Post reports that this will be the upcoming season (fourth season) will be the final season of Disney's hit Hannah Montana.
Miley Cyrus -- who plays Miley Stewart, a down-to-earth high schooler who leads a secret double life as pop star Hannah Montana -- has been making noises for more than a year that she is ready to move on.
But the news quietly marks the end of one of the most successful kids' shows ever. The show still averages nearly 5 million viewers a week.
"You never know in this business . . . but right now we're scheduled to wrap [forever] after shooting this new batch of episodes," says Disney Channel Worldwide's Adam Bonnett, senior VP/programming.
Miley Cyrus is ready to move on and has fans that will follow her but Disney may have a tough time finding a replacement for the show that captured 5 million viewers a week. The fourth season of Hannah Montana will premiere in late spring.
